My vote? The second option. =) Too much thinking about food...too much 

like a "diet." Normal people (the few that are left) don't write down what 

they eat. In my view, the goal is to *forget* about food until mealtime, 

and forget it immediately afterward too.

But a couple of months ago I tried keeping a diary just for a few days to 

see how many calories I typically ate. It was helpful in the short term 

because it helped me realize what those "little extra's" will add up to. It 

only takes an extra 500 calories per day to put on a pound per week, if the 

500 is in excess of your maintenance calories. 500 calories could be a big 

slice of cheesecake, or three cookies and a handful of chips, or a big bowl 

of ice cream. Yet another reason why Snacks and Sweets should not be 
everyday occurrences.
