One thing I really like about this diet is that we don't have to think about food all the time. We just eat, with some limits. The diet industry seems to play on the same passions that food companies excite in their advertising. They both arouse a desire for more-- more food, more flavor, more convenience, more "health," more energy, more sex-appeal--in which we become consumers, literally, of everything. It looks like an endless cycle of consumption and self- consumption. (And not to go too far out into outerspace, but it's nihilism lite or diet nihilism, for you philosophers of food.) I hear people talking about their diets all the time. It's understandable, since we've become so oriented toward food. And I like to eat good food as much as I like to contemplate food--behold the sandwich! But keeping busy with other things in life is a good way to not dwell on consuming food. Then when it's time to eat a meal, the No S check-list works quite well. What do you think? |
